How to Choose Your Perfect First Dance Song

Expert tips from a 20+ year wedding DJ on selecting a first dance song that reflects your unique love story.

How to Choose Your Perfect First Dance Song

Your first dance is one of the most memorable moments of your wedding day. After 20+ years as a wedding DJ, I've witnessed thousands of first dances—and I can tell you that the perfect song choice makes all the difference.

It's About Your Story, Not Trends

The best first dance songs have personal meaning. Maybe it was playing when you first met, or it reminds you of a special trip together. Don't feel pressured to choose a song just because it's popular or traditional.

Consider the Tempo

Think about whether you want a slow, romantic moment or something more upbeat. Slower songs (60-80 BPM) create an intimate atmosphere, while mid-tempo songs (90-110 BPM) can be easier to dance to if you're nervous.

Length Matters

Most first dances last 2.5-3.5 minutes. Songs longer than 4 minutes can feel endless, especially if you're not confident dancers. I can always edit songs to the perfect length if needed.

Popular Choices from 2025-2026

  • "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran (timeless classic)
  • "All of Me" by John Legend (romantic and popular)
  • "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran (another favorite)
  • "At Last" by Etta James (vintage elegance)
  • "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis (classic romance)
  • "Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac (upbeat and joyful)

Live vs. Studio Version?

Studio versions typically sound cleaner and more polished. Live versions can have great energy but may have crowd noise or vary in tempo. I always recommend the studio version unless the live version has special meaning to you.

Don't Forget to Practice

Once you've chosen your song, practice dancing to it a few times at home. You don't need choreography—just get comfortable moving together to the music. This will help you feel more confident on the dance floor.

What If We Can't Decide?

Create a shortlist of 3-5 songs and listen to them in different moods. Imagine yourself on the dance floor with all your loved ones watching. Which song gives you butterflies? That's probably the one.

Remember, there's no wrong choice—only what feels right for you as a couple. The most important thing is that your first dance reflects your unique relationship.
